In the conditions of chaos and actual anarchy in the regions, at the session of the Security Council, it was decided to petition to the CSTO to send a peacekeeping contingent to Kazakhstan during the period necessary to ensure stability and security. This was announced by the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, in an interview with Egemen Qazaqstan newspaper.
"I emphasize: the petition was not addressed to Russia, but to the CSTO, of which Kazakhstan is a member. At that time, the president of the organization was Armenia, and this year the presidency has passed to Kazakhstan.
"The Armenian contingent guarded the city canal and the Aksai [city] bread factory, (…). There were threats of terrorist attacks at the life support facilities, so the contingent was sent there. But the most important thing is that it enabled us to release our forces to carry out an antiterrorist operation," added, in particular, the president of Kazakhstan.
