Visitors to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport observation deck took photos of the charred remains of a Japan Airlines plane which burst into flames after landing and striking a Coast Guard plane the night before, Reuters reports.
The wreckage of both aircraft lay on the tarmac while investigators inspected the site of the Tuesday (January 2) accident that killed five of six crew members aboard the smaller Coast Guard aircraft.
At Tokyo’s Shinagawa station, where trains from the airport arrive, Tokyo resident Shinji Yamagami said he was shocked by the incident but relieved that all 379 people aboard the Japan Airlines Airbus A350 escaped.
The Coast Guard said its plane was headed to Niigata airport on Japan's west coast to deliver aid to those caught up in a powerful earthquake that struck on New Year's Day (January 1), killing at least 48 people.
