A referendum on Moldova's accession to the European Union will not be held in Transnistria. President Maia Sandu said that polling stations could not be opened there because the Moldovan authorities do not control the region.
However, residents of the left bank of the Dniestr River will be able to vote at polling stations on the right bank. On December 24, Maia Sandu asked the parliament to hold a national referendum on EU membership in the fall of 2024.
She suggested that Moldova could join the EU by 2030 together with unrecognized Transnistria, although the EU has not ruled out that accession could take place without the region.
