According to a decision by the Minister of Justice of Armenia, the transfer of a convicted Armenian citizen from Iran was carried out for the first time in order to serve the rest of his sentence in Armenia, reports the Ministry of Justice of Armenia.
Armenia and Iran collaborate in mutual legal assistance within the framework of the Agreement on the Transfer of Convicts. The agreement enables for persons who have committed a crime in one of the two aforesaid countries and have been sentenced to imprisonment to be transferred to their country of citizenship in order to serve the remainder of their sentence.
From the Armenian side, the Ministry of Justice of Armenia is the main agency regarding the transfer of convicts.
Several dozen convicts have been transferred from Armenia to Iran to their country of citizenship, but no Armenian citizen had been transferred from Iran. So despite the objective reasons, this agreement between the two countries had been implemented unilaterally only.
