Heavy snow blanketed multiple regions in northern China, causing school closures and mass-transportation disruptions, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Monday (December 11).
In Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province, the city's weather bureau issued a blizzard red warning in the early hours of Monday, warning that temperatures were expected to touch lows of -1.1 degrees Celsius (30.02F). The alarm was lifted later in the morning.
Crowds of people were seen stranded at Zhengzhou's railway station after 192 train departures were cancelled. Various expressways were closed and the city shut kindergartens as well as primary and middle schools for the day, according to CCTV.
In the neighbouring provinces of Shaanxi and Shanxi, severe snowfall also forced the closure of several expressway toll gates, CCTV reported.
