The governing parties Social Democrats (Socialdemokratiet), The Liberal Party (Venstre), The Moderates (Moderaterne), and the Danish Social Liberal Party (Radikale Venstre) voted for the proposal, while the rest of the Danish Parliament voted against it. The law has thus been adopted with 94 votes in favor and 77 against.
With the law, it now becomes a criminal offense to treat important religious writings – for example, the Quran and the Bible, and likely – inappropriately. For example by burning them.
The Danish Quran law has been discussed intensely since this summer.
The bill is set to act against 'meaningless insults'. This means that one must not treat religious scriptures inappropriately.
It was proposed by the Danish government to prevent the many burnings, which took place in particular in front of foreign embassies, and which triggered violent reactions in other countries.
The bill has since been amended, and today the Danish Parliament voted on it.
As something quite unusual, the opposition parties have today chosen to cancel agreements on clearings. This means that all members of the Parliament must be present when voting takes place. That is why there were also several politicians who showed up wearing masks as they did during the Covid-19 pandemic.
There were long discussions before the vote took place.
The parties outside the government raised criticism of the government parties and members, as none of these chose to speak and defend the bill prior to the vote.
