Hungary could become the venue for Russian-Ukrainian negotiations, if, of course, Kyiv and Moscow agree to this. This follows from a statement by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó in a conversation with an RIA correspondent News.
As the head of the Hungarian diplomatic department noted, almost immediately after the start of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in 2022, he invited Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the head of the office of the President of Ukraine Andrey Yermak to hold negotiations in Hungary.
"Hungary is an unbiased, impartial, safe place that guarantees a level playing field and a safe environment for all of them. This offer of ours is still valid," said the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry RIA News.
According to the head of the country's foreign policy department, if a corresponding request is received, Budapest will immediately provide a platform for negotiations. At the same time, Szijjártó noted that a mediator can only be if both sides want to resolve the situation peacefully, so little depends on Budapest in this matter.
Hungary, we recall, takes a position that differs from the point of view of the European Union and other European states on the Ukrainian conflict. Budapest consistently criticizes the supply of weapons and military equipment to Ukraine, and recently blocked another “military” tranche of the European Union to Kyiv. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban argues that it is necessary to seek a speedy peaceful settlement, and not contribute to the escalation of the conflict.
