The peace treaty will guarantee everything in this region for the next years and decades, it will ensure peaceful economic development. All the people of the region deserve peace and tranquility after decades of suffering. Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said during a joint press conference with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.
“Dear Mr. Minister, you said this visit puts an end to the decade when there were no diplomatic contacts or ties between our two countries. At the end of last year, we made a decision with Mr. Minister in Poland that we are resuming diplomatic ties and building such a cooperation that will serve the interests of both nations and countries,” said Péter Szijjártó, addressing Armenia’s Foreign Minister.
“This type of restoration will help us well, because there is a common ground, none other than Christianity - both countries have been Christian countries for many centuries. We Hungarians are proud to say that we have been a Christian state for more than 1,000 years. Then we come to Armenia, and see your dates and behave more modestly. The Armenian Christian Church played a very important role in reestablishing our ties. Before that, we tried to show our good intentions and held negotiations with our Azerbaijani friends in the framework of this, with the aim of returning 5 prisoners of war to Armenia in 2021.
Within the framework of these aspirations, we allocated 116 million forints (about $320 thousand) as assistance to those families from Nagorno-Karabakh who returned to Armenia. We also helped in the field of healthcare, as we provided 100,000 vaccine doses to your country during the pandemic,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary.
The Minister assured that Hungary will do everything to develop relations with Armenia.
“As a manifestation of this, we will provide another 40 million forints (over $110 thousand) to help the families who returned to Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh. If necessary, we are ready to participate in the treatment of these persons as well. Our medical facilities are ready to accept the children of these families, and the Hungarian children's camps are also ready to do so. We agreed today that 30 students will receive scholarships in Hungarian universities,” said Szijjártó, noting that the funding of the state budget of the Armenian community in Hungary has increased fourfold in 13 years.
“I asked the Minister today to allow me to establish a Hungarian consulate in Yerevan,” said the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, adding that they would “push” the Hungarian airline Wizz Air to add Budapest to the list of flight destinations. “After this decade, this will be a good enough solution,” said Szijjártó.
