There were consequences. One of them is that Azerbaijan has lost the trust of the international community, it is no longer considered a reliable partner by the international community. The Chairman of the Bundestag's Foreign Relations Committee, Michael Roth, said this, referring to the question of the 'Lurer's' reporter: ethnic cleansing of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians remained without consequences, what should stop Azerbaijan from initiating another aggression, this time against the sovereign territory of Armenia?
"As for our actions, we must do everything to ensure that the process takes place around the negotiation table and a sustainable peace is achieved that will guarantee the territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia," he said.
He noted that his self-criticism is not only personal. "It was aimed at Germany, the German government, the West in general, the EU, because in recent months we have constantly heard alarming warnings from our Armenian friends that the developments may go on a military path. These were concerns from the Armenian side that were not heard in European capitals. I am here to listen again to our Armenian colleagues," Roth said.
At the request of journalists, referring to the question under which conditions the sanctions can be implemented, the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Bundestag said:
"It's not like the sanctions are on the table and ready to be implemented. My point is that I will do my best to get them on the table and implemented. In any case, we will not allow the EU's energy cooperation with Azerbaijan to intensify.
Authoritarian states only understand one language, that's why it is necessary to emphasize what consequences their possible military actions could have if such developments take place."
He also emphasized that there are no sanctions mechanisms at the national level, that is, sanctions must be adopted by universal agreement within the EU.
"Unfortunately, there is currently no such agreement in the EU. My contribution as a parliamentarian in this matter is that we can convince the EU with all its strength, with all its willingness to act against Azerbaijan on the following principle, not to expand the energy gas cooperation with Azerbaijan. There are also opportunities for individual sanctions that can be used, but the usual practices of the past will not happen," said Michael Roth.
