First of all I would like to remind this House that, as the Commissioner has just pointed out, the European Union has condemned Azerbaijan's military operation against the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh and regrets the victims and losses lives caused by the escalation of the conflict, stated Pascual Navarro Ríos, MEP from Spain at the 'Situation in Nagorno-Karabakh after Azerbaijan’s attack and the continuing threats against Armenia' debate in the European Parliament.
"The European Union has stressed the need for greater transparency and guaranteed access for international humanitarian aid and human rights organizations, as well as more detailed information on Baku's plans for the future of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh within Azerbaijan.
The European Union expects Azerbaijan to assume its responsibility and guarantee the rights and security of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh, including their right to remain in their homes without intimidation or discrimination.
The European Union has also urged Azerbaijan to reaffirm its unequivocal commitment to the territorial integrity of Armenia, in accordance with the 1991 Almaty Declaration.
We remain committed to continuing to facilitate dialogue between all parties, with the aim of achieving a global and lasting peace that benefits the entire population. The European Union is monitoring the situation very closely and has expressed its readiness to take appropriate measures if the situation continues to deteriorate.
And finally, as I pointed out in my introduction, the European Union continues to consider the possible meeting of the leaders of the two countries as very pertinent within the framework of the third summit of the European Political Community scheduled for this week in Granada," Pascual Navarro Ríos said.
