What we are seeing today is the ethnic cleansing of the Christian Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh by the Azerbaijani regime, Miriam Lexmann, Slovak MEP stated at the 'Situation in Nagorno-Karabakh after Azerbaijan’s attack and the continuing threats against Armenia' debate in the European Parliament.
"Almost the entire population has already fled. They left behind their home and all their possessions. It is a huge humanitarian disaster and the EU must help.
However, it is unacceptable that the EU still considers Azerbaijan a strategic partner, given the current unprecedented situation. Therefore, I repeatedly call for a review of our relations with the dictatorial regime in Azerbaijan and support for Armenian democracy and Armenia's overall efforts to achieve peace and security.
I am of the opinion that if the EU had been a real leader and made full use of its strategic position in the region, we could have prevented this great human misfortune and suffering," Miriam Lexmann stated.
