The Armenian parliament ratified on Tuesday the Rome Statute with 60 votes in favor, 22 against and 0 abstentions.
Both opposition factions – Hayastan and Pativ Unem – voted against the ratification.
If ratified by the National Assembly, the Rome Statute will enter into force within 60 days, Yeghishe Kirakosyan, Representative of Armenia on International Legal Matters, said presenting the project.
Earlier, the Constitutional Court recognized the obligations laid down in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, signed on July 17, 1998, as conforming to the Constitution.
In 2022, the Government appealed to the Constitutional Court on this issue. The government has again returned to the issue of recognizing the Rome Statute, because, according to the rationale of this bill, the government sees an opportunity to call Azerbaijan to account.
