On September 29, the NA President of the Republic of Armenia Alen Simonyan met with the Speaker of the Parliament of Finland Jussi Halla-aho within the framework of the European Conference of the Presidents of Parliaments of the Council of Europe.
Congratulating his colleague on his election to the position of the Speaker of Parliament of Finland, Alen Simonyan noted that contacts between the legislative bodies will be intensified, promoting effective cooperation on bilateral and international platforms. The parties agreed that inter-parliamentary cooperation has an important role in promoting interstate relations.
The situation in Armenia and the challenges that need the support of international partners to overcome were at the core of the meeting. The RA NA President gave details about the Azerbaijani aggression against the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh, the large-scale offensive and the factors that led to their displacement. “Azerbaijan’s illegal actions stem from the inadequate response of the international community,” the RA NA President concluded. He added that the rights and security of our compatriots of Nagorno-Karabakh should be guaranteed internationally. The RA NA President presented the encroachments made by Azerbaijan against the territorial integrity of Armenia, reminding that our compatriots held hostage by Azerbaijan have not yet been returned.
There was a discussion about the information wars caused by the situation in the region and Azerbaijan’s spreading horrible videos and photos, as well as misinformation on social networks. At his colleague’s request, the RA NA Speaker touched upon the process of ratification of the Rome Statute by Armenia. Ideas were exchanged regarding the meeting of the RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev scheduled for October 5 in Granada.
At the end of the meeting, the RA NA President invited his colleague on an official visit to Armenia.
