In connection with the sharp escalation of the armed confrontation in Nagorno-Karabakh, Russia calls on the conflicting parties to immediately stop the bloodshed, stop military operations and exclude civilian casualties. This is stated in the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The department noted that the fate of the settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh was radically affected by official Yerevan's recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan in October 2022 and May 2023, which, according to the Russian side, changed the fundamental conditions under which the agreement was signed on November 9, 2020, as well as the state of the Russian peacekeeping troops.
"Since its deployment in the region, the Russian peacekeeping troops have conscientiously carried out the tasks of maintaining the ceasefire and ensuring relations between the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides. Our peacekeepers coordinated efforts to fix the humanitarian situation on the ground, and also contributed to the start of a direct dialogue between Baku and Stepanakert. Even at these hours, the Russian peacekeeping troops are providing aid to the civilian population, including medical aid, and are engaged in evacuation. Now the main thing is to urgently return to the implementation of the package of trilateral agreements signed at the highest level in 2020-2022, which specify all the steps for a peaceful solution to the Karabakh issue, stop the armed confrontation and do everything possible to ensure the rights and security of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh," statement reads.
