Adam Schiff, member of the US House of Representatives, called on the US authorities to end the blockade of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh in his Twitter microblog.
In his video message, he presented the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh and addressed the question of what the United States should do to hold Azerbaijan accountable and prevent another genocide against Armenians.
“Food, medicine, and other essential can’t get to these 120,000 people. As a result, people have already started dying. Right now there are about 120,000 people of Armenian origin in Nagorno-Karabakh who have been blockaded.
And there is a road called the Lachin Corridor, that connects Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia, and Azerbaijan has been stopping all traffic in and out of this area. As a result, it is a humanitarian catastrophe. This needs to be addressed. It needs to be addressed with urgency. I have been on the phone our UN Ambassador at the UN. They recently held a Security Council meeting that I urged them to hold but nonetheless nothing seems to have come out of it.
We need a resolution requiring an end to this violation of the international law. We need food and medical supplies to be able to come and go and people to be able to come and go freely, and the US government, the Biden administration needs to do so much more.
They need to cut off military aid for Azerbaijan. They need to make sure that that we bring an end to this illegal blockade. We should be providing a dime to Azerbaijan. I don’t think we should be doing it at all but certainly not while there is this kind of a blockade, this humanitarian catastrophe going on.
We can’t remain silent. The administration needs to speak. It needs to act. Something has to be done or more people are going to die. Azerbaijan has already made war on Armenia resulting in thousands and thousands of killed. They continue hold people as prisoners of war illegally in violation of the international law, detaining them without reason.
That needs to end. First and foremost, we need to stop this blockade of the Lachin Corridor. I am desperately worried that another genocide may be taking place against the Armenian people. The administration needs to act,” Schiff stated.
