Hawaii Governor Josh Green and several other local officials gave an update on Monday evening as the cleanup efforts continue after last week's devastating fires in Lahaina, Hawaii. The fire, which destroyed the ancient capital of the state, has claimed 99 lives, with the figure expected to grow as emergency personnel continue cleanup and identification efforts.
Green also stated that a very large amount of aid from the federal government and donations have been pouring into the area. The US Navy and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are helping local authorities in distributing the aid. In addition, Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen confirmed that 20 cadaver dogs and 90 personnel from FEMA are on the ground and assisting with the search.
Bissen told reporters that the search is currently in 'phase zero', according to the teams on the ground. He specified that residents in the affected areas would be allowed in after the completion of the phase.
