The opening of road and railway connections between Russia and Armenia through the territory of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Georgia is quite possible, said Denis Gonchar, director of the fourth department of the CIS countries, TASS reports.
“The problem of transit communication between Russia and Armenia through Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Georgia is periodically discussed by us in contacts with Yerevan, taking into account its objective interest in opening additional transport corridors that would connect our countries along with the Georgian Military Highway. We are sure that this will contribute to the discovery of the transport-logistics and transit potential of the region and will work in favor of the interests of all the countries of the South Caucasus. We believe that the solution to this issue is quite feasible if all interested parties are guided by pragmatic interests and take into account the realities in the region," said the diplomat.
Gonchar reminded that Armenia remains one of Russia's closest allies and a key partner in Transcaucasia. The locomotive of cooperation between Moscow and Yerevan is always the trust-based dialogue between the leaders of the two countries, as well as intensive contacts between heads of governments, ministries and departments, as well as parliamentary ties.
The director of the fourth department of the CIS countries noted that Russia is going to open a consulate in Syunik. According to him, Russian diplomats will visit Kapa in September on that issue. "We are actively working to open a Russian Consulate General in Kapan. This initiative was approved by our leaders during the meeting held on May 25 in Moscow. Our diplomats will visit the region in September, and they will deal with the solution of operational issues on the spot,” Gonchar said.
