In the morning of July 31, a group of young Armenian people blocked the entrances to the Armenian office of the International Committee of the Red Cross in capital Yerevan, expressing their protest regarding the kidnapping by Azerbaijan Vagif Khachatryan, who was being transported from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia accompanied by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The head of the Armenian delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Thierry Ribault, received the members of the initiative group.
Zara Amatuni, head of communication programs of ICRC Armenia Office, told reporters that the issues raised at the meeting were addressed. Amatuni also said that the movement of the Red Cross through the Lachin Corridor is currently suspended. She referred to the kidnapping of Vagif Khachatryan by Azerbaijan in the presence of representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
"I can't comment on the content of what happened at the scene, so to speak. I can only say that any problem that arises in the course of our work is confidentially discussed directly with the potential infringer or the party responsible for any given situation.
We saw the person the same day he was arrested. On the same evening, the delegates (by the way, foreigners, one of whom was a delegate, the other a doctor), our foreign colleagues visited the person in Azerbaijan, and during that visit, they were given the opportunity to contact the family.
As for communication with family, naturally, family members are the first to find out about our meeting, and then we can share very little information with the public as well. What we notice during our meetings, what kind of considerations we have, how we follow it and try to correct it during our next meeting, if necessary, all this is not subject to public discussion", Zara Amatuni said.
