The head of the foreign policy service of the European Union, Josep Borrell, said that “very important things” will happen in the next six months in the development of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
He also did not rule out the possibility of negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the situation. The statement was made in connection with the start of the Spanish EU Presidency, which will last until December 31, 2023.
“Everything has calmed down, but we don’t know what’s going on there. Yes, during the Spanish presidency, very important things will happen in the development of events in Ukraine, both on the battlefield and in more or less shady negotiations that may be to try to stop the war,” Josep Borrell said in an interview with the TV company TVE.
Josep Borrell did not comment on the possibility of official peace talks. “Honestly, I don’t know, it depends on what happens in the next days,” he said. Mr. Borrell noted that the number of peace initiatives is growing.
According to Russian Field, the proportion of those who support the cessation of the military operation in Ukraine and the transition to peace talks is 44% and is almost equal to the number of supporters of the continuation of hostilities. Sociologists at Russian Field conducted a survey from June 16 to 19, 1.6 thousand respondents took part in the survey.
