The Kasyan Street in Yerevan has been renamed after Catholicos of All Armenians Vazgen I. The decision was made during the sitting of the Yerevan City Council today.
Presenting the draft decision, Deputy Mayor Tigran Avinyan reminded that Kasyan stood at the origins of the collapse of the first Republic of Armenia.
At the same time, Avinyan referred to the participation of the Catholicos in the independence process and noted that “many valuable manuscripts and gospels were saved and handed over to Matenadaran thanks to His Holiness Vazgen I.”
Vazgen I was the first Catholicos to be awarded the highest title of National Hero of Armenia.
