Turkey has informed its NATO partners that Sweden will be able to join the Alliance if it fulfills its obligations in the framework of the fight against terrorism. This was announced by the head of the Turkish military department, Yaşar Güler, based on the results of the NATO ministerial meeting.
“In our bilateral negotiations with Stockholm, we announced our support for NATO's open door policy. We have informed our allies that Sweden will be able to join NATO, like Finland, in case of clear fulfillment of obligations in the trilateral memorandum signed in Madrid in June,” the Turkish Minister noted.
Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Sweden should not expect NATO membership during the summit in Vilnius. He emphasized that Stockholm must take concrete steps to join NATO.
