Nikol Pashinyan does not consider it realistic to sign the peace treaty until Thursday, reminding that the meeting in Moscow will take place on Thursday.
“If we manage to come to a common denominator regarding communications, you know our approaches and principles, I cannot rule it out. Our task is to conclude the negotiations and sign the peace treaty as soon as possible. Anyway, our team is working very hard. If we look at it practically, before Washington, we transferred our edits to Azerbaijan, it was the fourth edit, and now we are waiting for their response, which, we hope, will express the discussions, mutual understanding, agreements, the progress of the understanding that took place in Washington,” Pashinyan stated.
According to him, if Azerbaijan conveys their reaction this week, and if the Armenian side considers them acceptable, in the logic of compromise, then it is possible that the document will be signed soon. “But at the moment we have not received their responses.”
Touching upon the issue of international guarantors, Pashinyan noted that there is a change of understanding on that topic as well. “Being a guarantor in such a complex region is first of all a very big responsibility, which can create chain opportunities and risks for countries, and can raise or lower the reputation of the country. In this sense, it is not like everyone is enthusiastic and wants to assume that role without giving each other a turn.
I am sure that if the international community records that there is a sincere desire between the parties to establish lasting peace, there will be countries and organizations that will not only want, but will agree to take on this function,” said Nikol Pashinyan.
Armenia’s Prime Minister also mentioned that “a very direct conversation took place” during the Washington negotiations, then presented what is the most important record of the 4-5 days of negotiations. “Since X moment, the parties seem to have started to communicate with each other more directly and openly, presenting their concerns, presenting the grounds of mistrust towards the other.”
