Reuters. U.N. chief Antonio Guterres receive the Charles V European Award, on Tuesday (May 9) in Caceres, Spain where he urged leaders to work to achieve peace every day.
"Peace can never be underestimated or assumed that it is made. We must work for it every day without rest," he said after receiving the award from Spain's King Felipe.
"In a world that is being torn apart, we must heal divisions, prevent escalation and listen to grievances," he added.
Before the award, the U.N. chief told El Pais newspaper in an interview published Tuesday that he sees no immediate possibility of reaching a comprehensive ceasefire in the war in Ukraine as both sides are convinced they can win and that the UN was instead focusing on talks with both Russia and Ukraine to solve concrete problems such as extending the Black Sea grain deal that is set to expire on May 18.
The Charles V European Award ceremony was held at the Yuste Monastery and organised by the Yuste European and Iberoamerican Foundation.
Past winners include former German Chancellor Angela Merkel (2021), Jacques Delors (1995), Mikhail Gorbachev (2002), and fellow Portuguese Jorge Sampaio (2004), among others.
