Reuters. Chinese President Xi Jinping held a trilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday (April 6), during which the leaders discussed a range of issues.
In the closely-watched talks, Macron urged Xi to use his influence with close ally Russia to help end the conflict in Ukraine.
Von der Leyen stated that she did not see decoupling from China as a viable or desirable strategy.
During his opening remarks, Xi emphasised the importance of China and Europe upholding dialogue and cooperation in order to maintain global peace and stability.
The visit of the EU leaders to China follows years of deteriorating relations between Brussels and Beijing, which were fuelled by various issues and China's approach to the war in Ukraine.
