Poland is building a dam on the border with Russia.
According to the spokeswoman of the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Border Guard Unit, Major Mirosława Aleksandrowicz, the construction of the razor-wire barrier is currently underway on most sections of the Border Guard posts along the border with Russia.
“A total of approx. 107 km of this dam have already been built,” she added.
This means that the concertina dam has so far been built over half the length of the land border with the Kaliningrad oblast of the Russian Federation, which is approx. 198 km long.
The dam on the Polish-Russian border has been built by the army since the beginning of November last year at the request of the border guard. It is 2.5 m high and 3 m wide. It consists of three rows of razor wire stretched on metal poles driven into the ground. A wildlife protection net is installed in front of the wire barrier.
In turn, in the first half of April – as reported by the Border Guard – installation works on the electronic firewall are to start. It will be a system of sensors and cameras, enabling 24-hour monitoring of the border, regardless of weather conditions, without the need to stay on the border line.
The electronic firewall will cover the entire land border with Russiaexcept for the section of the Vistula Spit, where the border has been protected by electronic devices for several years.
According to the Border Guard, last year there were 11 cases of illegal crossing of the so-called green border from Russia to Poland for migration purposes. There were also cases of entering the strip of the border road, mainly by tourists who wanted to take commemorative photos at the border post. There is a fine of PLN 500 for entering the border road lane.
