French President Emmanuel Macron wins the backing of the French Senate to reform the pension system.
The legislation was passed with 193 votes in favour and 114 votes against.
Since the beginning of 2023, the controversial reform has sparked massive protests and strikes. The outcome of the vote will be a crucial one for President Macron.
The lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, will also have a vote this afternoon. Getting a majority here will be more difficult. The French assembly is divided and the outcome of the vote could come down to a handful of votes.
