The Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a three-day mourning in connection with the death of people as a result of the railway accident, the press service of the Prime Minister reports.
The trains collided in the Tempi settlement near the city of Larissa. The incident took place around midnight on Wednesday, under undisclosed circumstances, at Evangelismos station, more than 200 kilometers northwest of Athens. According to the latest data, 36 people died, 66 were hospitalized, 6 of them are in the intensive care unit.
As a result of the collision, a fire broke out, three wagons derailed; 150 firefighters are involved in the rescue work, 17 fire engines and four cranes are on the spot; 30 ambulances are on duty.
The press secretary of the Greek Government said that the competent authorities have already started an investigation to find out the cause of the accident.
