The USA holds consultations with all the countries of the world regarding the reform of the UN Security Council, but it cannot change the composition of the "five" permanent members. US ambassador to the world organization, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, announced this on Wednesday, during a hearing in the Appropriations Committee of the House of Representatives.
The diplomat was asked whether she supports the view that India and Japan should become permanent members of the Security Council.
“In September of last year, we started discussions on Security Council and UN reforms. We support Security Council reforms to make them more inclusive and representative,” he said.
“The five permanent members are fixed by the UN Charter, I cannot change it, but we can add new permanent and temporary members,” the US ambassador noted.
