At least 32 people were killed and 85 others injured when a passenger train collided with a cargo train in central Greece late Tuesday night, showed the data from the local firefighting authorities, Reuters reports.
According to Greek media reports, the collision took place near Greece's fourth largest city Larissa. The passenger train with around 350 passengers aboard was traveling from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki, while the cargo train was on the way from Thessaloniki to Larissa.
A local official said that the first four carriages of the passenger train derailed due to the collision, with the first two carriages almost destroyed.
Rescue teams have arrived at the site, and hospitals in the region have been informed to prepare for the rescuing efforts. The cause of the accident remains unclear.
