Police and anti-government protesters in Peru clashed during protests in Lima on Thursday night (February 9), Reuters reports.
Protests throughout the Andean nation triggered by the ousting of former President Pedro Castillo have been going on for two months.
Protesters demand freedom for Castillo, the resignation of President Dina Boluarte - who took over after Castillo's ousting - and the closing of Congress.
"Listen well Mrs. Dina Boluarte, the spilled blood will never be forgotten," said protester Maruja, referring to the 48 deaths that have occurred during the protests.
In the southern city of Juliaca protesters took to the streets to commemorate the one-month anniversary of clashes that left 19 people dead in the city.
As the army was preparing a shipment of humanitarian aid for Peruvians affected by demonstrators' road blockades, Defense Minister Jorge Chavez asked for Congress to have the country's best interest in mind while taking decisions.
Despite pressure from Boluarte, Congress has failed to bring forward the election, a move that many believe could reduce protests.
