During a telephone conversation with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to help in eliminating the consequences of the earthquake. This is reported by the Kremlin website.
"Bashar al-Assad gratefully accepted the offer, and within the next few hours rescuers from the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation will leave for Syria," the message states.
