Reuters. Security around Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar was noticeably tighter on Tuesday (January 31) morning, as the death toll from Monday’s (January 30) suicide bombing of a mosque rose to 90.
The attack occurred in one of the most fortified areas of Peshawar, which houses offices of the police and counter-terrorism departments. The bomber blew himself up shortly after hundreds of worshippers lined up to say their afternoon prayers, the latest in a string of attacks targeting police.
One local resident at a newspaper kiosk, Shabbir Khan, said the circumstances of the bombing was of “great concern” for him.
“It is a matter of great condemnation that terrorists can enter a government department. If the government departments don't have security, what safety can they provide us,” said Khan.
No one has claimed responsibility. Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an umbrella of Sunni and sectarian Islamist groups, has denied responsibility.
