It is an obligation for us to be here because there are tensions that are intensifying and making Armenia vulnerable. Yael Braun-Pivet, Speaker of the French National Assembly, said this today during a press conference with Armenia’s Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan.
“We must stand by brotherly peoples and brotherly countries whose territorial integrity is under threats and attacks.
The events of September caused an uproar in France, and the National Assembly responded to that uproar. We adopted a resolution demanding the cessation of Azerbaijan's aggression against Armenia and the establishment of lasting peace in the South Caucasus. We also appealed to the French government to continue its mediation activities, to strengthen support to Armenia, to reconfirm the process of discussions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, so that a certain solution can finally be worked out,” she said.
She emphasized that France has always been by Armenia's side.
“We are very worried about the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. The ongoing blockade creates a humanitarian situation that is getting worse.
It is critical that free traffic is restored through the Lachin Corridor, as well as power and internet connectivity. We will do everything to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe," said the Speaker of the French National Assembly.
She also referred to the historical and cultural heritage, which, according to the Speaker of the National Assembly of France, is endangered in the territories under the control of Azerbaijan.
“About 1,500 samples of Armenian cultural and historical heritage must be preserved. France will make efforts in that direction together with UNESCO. Heritage is our history, it is the life of an entire people,” she said.
Summarizing, the Speaker of the National Assembly of France emphasized the importance of the dialogue between the parties to reach a peaceful and stable solution.
