Thunderstorms and hail pummelled the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday (January 10) in the wake of yet another "atmospheric river" of dense, moist tropical air that clobbered California state with severe weather, Reuters reports.
Eyewitness video obtained by Reuters showed a resident's backyard littered with hailstones as clumps of snow and ice continued to pelt the ground. Later, the sky turned dark as intense thunderstorms pounded the area, before starting to hail once again, according to the eyewitness.
The latest dramatics came on the 16th day of stormy weather that had led to floods, landslides, evacuations and at least 14 deaths statewide, according to local media. The National Weather Service (NWS) has also issued weather warnings of the intensity of the storm cells for the region, advising residents of possible flash floods in San Francisco.
The rapid succession of storms left downtown San Francisco drenched in 10.3 inches (26 cm) of rain from Dec. 26 through Jan. 4, the wettest 10-day stretch recorded there in more than 150 years, since 1871, according to the NWS.
