Turkey's six-party opposition alliance will nominate a joint candidate in the presidential elections. This was announced on Friday by the leader of the Future Party, former Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, commenting on the Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's statement about the possibility of holding early elections.
At the same time, Davutoglu did not specify who will be the opposition's presidential candidate.
The candidate of the ruling "People's Alliance", which includes the "Nationalist Movement" party with the AKP, is the current president of Turkey, Erdogan. He has repeatedly urged the opposition to nominate their candidate, but the latter refuse to do so until the election day is set.
Turkey's next presidential and parliamentary elections are scheduled for June 18, 2023, but the ruling party is proposing to hold the elections earlier due to the start of university exams in June, the student holiday and the holiday period in general, which the AKP says could reduce voter turnout.
April 30, May 7 or 14 are mentioned as possible dates of the elections.
