The House of Representatives voted 216-214 to adjourn for the day after Republican leader Kevin McCarthy failed to win the House speakership for the sixth time on Wednesday.
Day Two of the new Congress has remained as gridlocked as the first day, with a group of republicans refusing to support McCarthy for speaker.
The sixth vote ended without any nominee receiving the necessary 218 votes to become Speaker. McCarthy finished with 201. All House democrats supported Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, who finished with 212.
Yesterday's defeat was the first time in 100 years that a nominee for House speaker could not take the gavel on the first vote.
