Vasif Talibov, Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of the Nakhijevan Autonomous Republic, has resigned. He announced his decision at today's session of the Supreme Mejlis.
The Azerbaijani media connect this resignation with the persecution of high-ranking officials in Nakhijevan, the arrests of dozens of officials and inspections in state departments continue in Baku.
According to experts, the target of the power structures is mainly the "Khan of Nakhijevan", Chairman of the Supreme Mejlis, Vasif Talibov, who until recently was considered untouchable, being close to Heydar Aliyev. It is believed that the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, has decided to end his 27-year rule.
Talibov has been the head of the parliament of the Autonomous Republic of Nakhijevan since 1995. According to reports, he came to power thanks to his marriage with Sevil Sultanova, who is the daughter of Heydar Aliyev's brother.
It is already known who will replace Talibov. Azer Zeynalov became the acting chairman of the Nakhijevan Supreme Mejlis and his first deputy.
