Special units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are in Kherson, the President of Ukraine announced. Volodymyr Zelensky stated that this is a historic day.
“We are in the process of returning Kherson,” Zelensky said. Videos have also appeared on the Internet, in which it can be seen that local residents solemnly greet the units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Earlier, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced the completion of the withdrawal of its forces from the eastern bank of the Dnieper without losses.
Kherson was the first major city and the only regional center captured by the Russian armed forces during hostilities. Later, Russia declared this region as its territory along with the self-proclaimed republics of Zaporozhye region of Ukraine, Donetsk and Lugansk.
Dmitry Medvedev, the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, stated that Russia will continue to consider Kherson as its territory, and intends to recapture the city in the future.
Referring to the topic, the French President wrote on Twitter: “I welcome the return of Kherson to Ukraine, which is an important step towards the full restoration of its sovereign rights. France stands by the Ukrainians.”
