Russia will continue the mediation efforts for the signing of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federal Assembly Valentina Matviyenko said at the meeting with the Azerbaijani Speaker of Parliament Sahiba Gafarova.
“Russia has acted and will act as a mediator and will provide support so that the two countries come to the signing of the peace treaty,” Matviyenko said.
Valentina Matviyenko reminded that Russian President Vladimir Putin in his speech during the Valdai conference has stated that Russia will support any decision that will contribute to the establishment of peace in the region, and of course, the interests of both countries must be taken into account.
“Both Armenia and Azerbaijan should find solutions over border delimitation and problematic issues,” Matviyenko said, adding that the parliamentary cooperation will also be used for achieving this goal.
DEPUTY PREMIER OF AZERBAIJAN ON TRANSPORT
Shahin Mustafayev, Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, the representative of Azerbaijan in the trilateral commission for unblocking of the region, stated that the so-called ‘Zangezur Corridor’, which Baku is talking about, has nothing to do with the principle of extraterritoriality.
“The transport corridor is a route that passes through the territory of countries that have agreed transport, customs and other policies. The goal is to reduce the cost and time of cargo transportation," he noted, adding that according to the November 9 statement, through the territory of Armenia the control of transport communication will be carried out by the border guard service of Russia.
Mustafayev added that it is important to agree on the modes of international transit cargo transportation, as well as to agree on the establishment of simplified modes for domestic transportation on the basis of parity.
Earlier, a number of high-ranking officials of Azerbaijan, including the country's President, announced that the road passing through Syunik should have the same status as the Lachin Corridor.
