On October 20th, Ambassador Varuzhan Nersesyan visited the University of Cambridge and delivered a speech at King’s Politics Centre for political discussion․
In his speech Ambassador Nersesyan outlined Armenia’s current security challenges, highlighting that Azerbaijan's constant provocations undermine the efforts aimed at achieving peace in the region. He gave a detailed presentation on the consequences of the recent large-scale aggression against the Republic of Armenia, which resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives and indiscriminate targeting of civilian infrastructure. In this context, he underscored the necessity of the immediate withdrawal of the Azerbaijani armed forces from Armenia’s internationally recognized territories.
The Ambassador presented the position of the Armenian side regarding the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue through existing international mechanisms, which must ensure security and all the rights of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Ambassador Nersesyan stressed the need for the immediate release of the Armenian prisoners of war, noting that dozens are illegally held in Azerbaijan for almost 2 years following the November 9th trilateral statement. Moreover, he stressed that the extrajudicial killings of Armenian prisoners of war and the inhumane treatment towards them by the armed forces of Azerbaijan are considered a war crime and should unconditionally be punished.
Ambassador Nersesyan concluded by thanking Kings college for hosting him, and the floor was opened to a question and answer session with its students.
