Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to NATO Rüdiger Koenig in an interview with Spiegel explained the impossibility for the alliance to respond to the requests of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for help.
“Ukraine is not a member of NATO. Therefore, there are no obligations for collective self-defense,” the diplomat recalled.
According to him, in no case does Germany want the North Atlantic Alliance to take part in the hostilities, since this will lead to a big war, in which all 30 member states that do not want it will be participants.
Koenig also urged to regard the assistance to Ukraine from the Western allies from NATO as the actions of individual countries, and not of the entire political bloc.
Earlier, the New York Times reported that NATO would not allow Ukraine to join the alliance before the end of the Russian special operation on its territory. In the event of its joining the alliance, he would have to turn to the fifth article of the charter on the mutual defense of all members.
