Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that his fellow citizens do not want to join the European Union. According to him, the reason for this is the “double standards of the West.”
“If there was a referendum on EU accession now, the citizens of Serbia would say no. I hope we can change this in the months and years ahead of us,” he said at a briefing in Slovenia, where a summit is being held with the participation of the leaders of the Western Balkans and Kosovo President Vyosa Osmani.
According to Vučić, the EU has a “full mouth” of worries about the territorial integrity of Ukraine, but at the same time they “destroyed the territorial integrity of Serbia with a hammer.” The Serbs cannot accept this hypocrisy, he believes.
He added that there is now a “clear and unequivocal majority in the country against joining the European Union”, but expressed hope that in the future it will be possible to see real interest in joining the EU.
