The French newspaper Le Monde published an article by 50 elected officials, who referred to the initiative of Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, to replace Russian gas with Azerbaijani gas for the EU.
“It goes without saying that Ursula von der Leyen’s announcement of a new agreement to double Azerbaijan's gas imports in order to diversify supply sources horrifies anyone who knows how the dictatorship in Azerbaijan uses revenues from gas sales. For more than 30 years, they have supported the same clan leading the regime, which not only violates human rights, but also finances the purchase of weapons with which they destroy Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh and the Republic of Armenia.
The authors reminded that Azerbaijan and Turkey involved jihadist terrorists in the 44-day war against Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), about which French President Emmanuel Macron also spoke, and also used prohibited weapons, such as phosphorus bombs.
The authors of the article also expressed the opinion that Turkey and Azerbaijan are trying to hide their differences in the process of establishing peace with Armenia. The officials also reminded that Ilham Aliyev has ambitions for the sovereign territories of Armenia: Syunik, Lake Sevan, even Yerevan. They also informed the readers that Ankara and Baku want to "get a corridor and connect Turkey and Azerbaijan" through the territory of Syunik.
“Therefore, we call on the European Commission to abandon this project with Azerbaijan, and the heads of states and governments of the European Union, as well as the European Parliament, to under no circumstances ratify such an agreement that will lead to the replacement of dependence on Russian gas with Azerbaijani gas,” the authors of the article concluded.
