A magnitude 5.5 earthquake damaged buildings, including a local church, in northern Ecuador's San Gabriel city on Monday (July 25), eyewitness video showed.
So far eight people have been injured and hundreds of homes damaged in the quake, the National Risk and Emergency Management Service of Ecuador (SNGR) said on their official twitter account. The earthquake struck at around 8:33 a.m. (1333 GMT), with an epicentre just 5 kilometres (3.11 miles) southwest of San Gabriel , authorities said.
Eyewitness video obtained by Reuters showed local residents shovelling debris off streets outside damaged homes and broken religious statues littered across the floors of a local church.
The quake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. The U.S. Tsunami Warning System said there was no tsunami warning after the quake.
