British Foreign Minister Liz Truss is considered the favorite of the intra-party fight for the post of the Prime Minister. According to the latest YouGov poll, Truss could lead former finance minister Rishi Sunak by 19 percentage points in the final vote.
According to the results of yesterday's vote, Truss (113 votes) and Sunak (137 votes) entered the last stage of the fight for the position of the leader of the Conservative Party and the Prime Minister of UK, narrowly ahead of the deputy foreign trade minister Penny Mordaunt (105 votes).
All members of the party are to participate in the final stage voting of the elections by mail. The results will be announced on September 5, when parliament resumes after the summer break.
Boris Johnson, who resigned earlier, made a farewell speech in the parliament yesterday. He thanked members of the House of Commons and other colleagues and offered advice to the next Prime Minister. In particular, he urged "to be closer to the USA", "to protect Ukrainians and freedom around the world", as well as to reduce taxes and weaken state regulation in the country's economy.
Johnson's final words were the phrase "Hasta la vista, baby" from the words of the main character played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day".
