The European Union does not require the Moldovan authorities to join the anti-Russian sanctions, but will be happy with such a development of events. This was stated on Saturday, July 9, by the head of the EU mission in Chisinau, Janis Mazeiks, reports TASS.
“There is no clear requirement, but we will be glad to see that the Republic of Moldova will be able to join one or another sanctions,” he said. According to the diplomat, Brussels understands the specifics of the situation in which Moldova finds itself. “On the other hand, I think it will be important how Moldova develops in this direction as well,” Mazeix added, explaining that EU candidate countries are expected to gradually converge with Brussels’ foreign policy.
Earlier, the Moldovan Foreign Ministry announced that the status of a candidate for the EU does not imply Chisinau’s support for anti-Russian sanctions. At the same time, he acknowledged that the parties are constantly discussing this.
Moldovan officials have previously assured that Chisinau has not supported Western sanctions against Russia since 2014 and is not going to do so for economic reasons.
The Security Council of the Russian Federation warned that if the authorities of Moldova in an attempt to “please their new masters” will join the anti-Russian sanctions they will not receive from Moscow not only “expensive” energy resources, but no other resources at all.
