A wildfire forced the evacuation of hundreds of tourists on Friday (July 1) from a holiday resort in Spain, Reuters reports.
Emergency services helped British, German, French, Dutch and Italian tourists to evacuate their resort on the Costa Brava in the North East of Spain and shelter at a local leisure centre.
“I was actually thinking more about the adventure, I found the helicopters extremely interesting. We were taken around the facilities really quick and it was intriguing. They were fetching water to put out the fire, that was very interesting. I didn’t feel fear but the kids did and then of course as a mother you are a bit emotional but no, I didn’t feel any fear,” said German tourist Karen Bimkamme.
“It was an unusual experience. We didn’t expect it but everything is working very well,” said Italian tourist Boffa Maurella.
Firefighters said 350 people were evacuated during the operation.
Beachgoers watched yellow water tankers fly just over the buildings to load water from the sea to fight a wildfire that has burnt more than 70 hectares of forest.
Emergency services said they expect to control the fire during the evening and the evacuated tourists hope to return to their holiday resort during the night.
