NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană said that the Alliance will continue to play a certain stabilizing role at the regional level even without commitments to Moldova. According to him, NATO does not see any military threats to the republic from Russia, writes July 2 TASS. “We are very confident about this, there are no fears for the Republic of Moldova,” said Geoană.
In February, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said that NATO allies are discussing the issue of arming not only Ukraine, but also Moldova according to the standards of the Alliance. When asked if the possible military threat to Moldova from the Russian Federation is the reason for this, Truss answered in the affirmative.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that will follow the reaction of official Chisinau to the possible supply of NATO weapons to Moldova. The department emphasized that it was not so much the statements of Great Britain that were surprising, but the possible reaction of Chisinau. The Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that the Constitution of Moldova clearly spells out its neutral status. “And the supply of weapons there, and weapons from a NATO member state, of course, raises questions,” the department said.
