During a meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister last week, the President of Azerbaijan complained about the Armenian side, stating that their offer to work on a peace agreement has so far remained unanswered. He insisted that the opening of communication channels with Nakhichevan is the legal obligation of official Yerevan, which, however, the Armenian side is not in a hurry to fulfill.
The question of the Public Television addressed to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan was the following: how will you react to these observations of the President of Azerbaijan, why the agreements reached are not implemented in practice yet, is it possible to reach acceptable solutions if one of the parties is always the accuser?
“In general, the speech of Azerbaijan has been a big problem, and it continues to be so. The international community, I think, states that Armenia always tries to be maximally constructive, but in response we see the constantly aggressive rhetoric of Azerbaijan.
A meeting was to take place today between Hajiyev and Grigoryan and, the Azerbaijani side canceled the meeting. We have proposed a meeting of the foreign ministers to plan further work. At the moment, we have no response,” Pashinyan said.
The Prime Minister also touched upon the topic of opening communications.
“I must state that with a trilateral statement, it is the legal obligation of Azerbaijan, the legal obligation of all of us to achieve the opening of economic and transport communications in the region. We have repeatedly stated that we are interested in this case.
I have to state the following. When we agreed with the President of Azerbaijan in Brussels, I also announced that we had reached an agreement to start the construction of the railway, after which Azerbaijan withdrew from that agreement.
After that, a proposal was made to record the agreements reached in a written form, the draft document was submitted by the co-chair of the trilateral working group, Alexei Overchuk from Russia, the Armenian side expressed readiness to sign the document, the Azerbaijani side refused,” said the Prime Minister.
Pashinyan also referred to the statement made by the President of Azerbaijan hours before the meeting in Brussels. Ilham Aliyev stated that the roads passing through the territory of Armenia should follow the same logic as the Lachin corridor.
“I stated at the time that this was unacceptable for us, because it is clear in the trilateral statement that there is only one corridor mentioned there, it is the Lachin corridor, which, according to the trilateral document, is under the full control of Russian peacekeepers. Nothing has been written about the corridors passing through Armenia,” Pashinyan said.
