International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol on Wednesday warned Europe to be prepared for an energy crisis in case Russia completely cuts off its gas exports to the continent.
According to a report released by the IEA on the same day, global energy investment is expected to increase by 8 percent in 2022, which however is not enough to tackle the current energy crisis and climate changes.
Birol said that Europe needs to make contingency plans as it might completely lose energy supply from Russia.
European nations are urged to take measures including filling storage, keeping nuclear power stations open and restart coal-fired power stations, said Birol.
Before Russia's special military operation, the EU received about 40 percent of its natural gas from Russia, which is also the bloc's main oil supplier.
